Is now a good time to hire?

We are coming into a festive season and lets face it, we could all do with a break. But is now the best time to hire someone? As with everything, there are pros and cons to doing this. So let’s get right into it!

Pros

Your culture is at the best for all of the year. There is going to be a natural festive feeling to your office, and this will naturally leak over in interviews. Any decorations you have in your office will also add to the festive cheer.

Anyone looking to make a move will want often want to move quickly. Though December is a full month, people tend to only work 3 out of the 4 weeks. That would mean that if you are savvy about your interview process, you can fast track applications with candidates.

Your budget may not be over target and you may find yourself in a position where you will lose some funding for the following year. This can be a strategic decision on your part to make sure that you have the same budget for your recruitment needs the following year.

Induction can also be easier. It might make more sense to bring someone in for their first few days on a more casual setting. This will make sure that you have all of the admin sorted by the New Year.

Cons

Sometimes there is simply not enough time to process the application. This is where you will have to really think about when you start a process in December, can you finish it inside the month? If not, it would be best to let the candidate know upfront. This means there are no hard feelings if the holidays come up and the process isn’t finished yet. You will have less of a chance of your candidates changing their minds over the holidays due to perceived slights.

Some people can be really nervous about making a decision so close to the holidays. Sometimes in your haste to get an offer across the table, you can potentially scare off a candidate. While urgency is certainly required, it needs to be tempered with respect. If you are looking to have the process finished before the holidays, set your expectations in your interviews. This way your candidate knows that they need to decide if they are in a position to accept an offer this side of the year. And can advise you accordingly.
